In what order, and at what age, do your baby's 20 teeth come in? A chart and month-by-month table, teething signs and first tooth care.

In what order do baby teeth come in?

The numbers in the chart show the order. Matching teeth on the right and left usually come in around the same time.

What happens during teething?

Signs often start a few days before a tooth comes through and ease once it is out.

Common signs

  • More drooling, redness around the mouth.
  • Chewing on anything within reach.
  • Red, swollen gums.
  • Fussiness and broken sleep.

To soothe

  • Gently rub the gums with a clean finger.
  • Offer a teething ring chilled in the fridge (not frozen).
  • Wipe drool often to keep the skin around the mouth dry.
  • Ask your doctor whether pain relief is needed.

Avoid

  • Amber or beaded teething necklaces: a choking and strangulation risk.
  • Teething gels with benzocaine: not recommended under 2 years.
  • Frozen hard objects: they can hurt the gums.
  • Honey on a dummy: no honey before 1 year.

First tooth care

  • Before teeth come in, you can wipe the gums with a clean, damp cloth after feeds.
  • Once the first tooth is in, brush twice a day with a soft baby toothbrush and a rice-grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste. From age 3, use a pea-sized amount.
  • Falling asleep with a bottle or while drinking milk raises the risk of decay; brush after the last feed of the night.
  • Plan the first dental visit when the first tooth appears, and by the first birthday at the latest.

Frequently asked questions

When does the first tooth come in?

For most babies the first tooth comes in between 6 and 10 months, usually one of the bottom front teeth. Some babies get a tooth at 4 months and others have none until their first birthday; both are usually normal.

Does teething cause fever?

Body temperature can rise slightly during teething, but a fever of 38 °C (100.4 °F) or higher, diarrhoea or clear drowsiness should not be put down to teething. In those cases, contact your doctor.

When should I worry if no teeth have come in?

If your child has no teeth at all by 18 months, talk to your doctor or a paediatric dentist.

When are all baby teeth in?

All 20 baby teeth are usually in by age 2½ to 3. The second molars at the back come last.

Is it a problem if teeth come in a different order?

The order varies from baby to baby; for example, top front teeth often come in before the bottom ones, and that alone is not a sign of a problem.
